CREATIVE & COMMUNITY PROJECTS
Take a look at what we do, both individually and as a doodly scribbly team, from bespoke design and copy-writing commissions, to community engagement, fundraising, and even breaking world records!
Great Ormond Street - Green Spaces Trail
A wonderful commission from the Great Ormond Street Hospital Arts Programme (GOSH Arts), to create a poetic nature trail that would lead hospital inpatients and their families to the many green spaces in and around Great Ormond Street Hospital. Our trail features a moving poem, which reflects on the rhythms of nature and emotion that weave through daily life, as well as thoughtful and imaginative activities for each place visited, to encourage little ones to pause, explore and discover nature all around them.
‘The Pause’ - Reflections on Lockdown
We created our animated poem, ‘The Pause’, to reflect on the unprecedented experiences of recent times. We also created a thoughtful accompanying resource pack for schools and home learning, to help children explore their own lockdown experiences. This activity pack is available to download here. Sales of ‘The Pause’ poem and illustration have helped to raise funds for The Childhood Trust, to support their vital work with vulnerable children living in poverty.
Creating a WOW with Windows!
As the first point of visual contact, we believe that windows are mighty important! They set a tone, create a welcome, and spark curiosity or imagination about what lies within. We have been delighted to create impactful window displays for shops such as The Bookseller Crow in Crystal Palace, and hospitals such as Great Ormond Street, where we transformed the hospital’s main entranceway for six months, to reflect their arts programme theme of ‘Biophilia’.
Stepping Into Stories - Herne Hill Kids’ Lit Fest
Lucy has a lead role in managing the Herne Hill Kids’ Lit Fest and Stepping Into Stories Competition, in partnership with Children’s Writers & Illustrators for Stories & Literacy (CWISL), multi-award winning Tales On Moon Lane Children’s Bookshop and the Station Hall Herne Hill. Two knock-out festivals were delivered in 2019 and 2020, and a third is underway for February 2022. The festivals feature leading names from across the children’s book and publishing world, with a packed programme both for schools and the public .
World Record Breakers! Community Colour by Numbers
Lucy led a successful Guinness World Record attempt in which 2,332 Herne Hillians, including pupils from eight schools, helped to colour in a stunning 40m long mural, created by artist Victor Szepessy. Lucy’s role included concept development, fundraising, schools engagement, stakeholder management, and overarching project management on behalf of the Herne Hill Forum. This incredible community effort has transformed an intimidating underpass into a place of beauty and collective achievement. To see the finished result, watch ‘The Wonderful Walk’, a film about the project, here.
giving back through books
We believe in supporting good causes! We have used our book sales to raise funds for the British Hedgehog Preservation Society; and sales of ‘The Pause’ artwork to support the vital work that the Childhood Trust undertakes with children living in poverty. We also have a ‘charity allocation’ of books each year, from which we donate books to charities that are important to us, including Barnardo’s.
art commissions - beautiful gifts & keepsakes
When not working on books and other projects, Jenna loves to create one-off commissions. Here are a couple of recent pieces commissioned as gifts.
Building a Community Epicentre - Launching Station Hall
With her community project management hat on, Lucy led an ambitious development programme to fund, launch and evaluate a vibrant new community hub - Station Hall Herne Hill. With a £55,000 development grant from the Mayor’s Office, Lucy worked with a small core team to deliver far-reaching impact. In its first nine months of operation, Station Hall hosted 456 events, organised by 79 organisations, attended by over 5,000 people and with 60% of bookings to community and charitable partners.
